Charles Avenengo - Pernambuco, Brazil

Hello, I went on a Spot Jaguar Pantanal South tour in western Mato Grosso do Sul between July 26-31, 2026. This brief testimony is a mini account for the trip. I am an American naturalist currently living in Northeast Brazil. I have field experience dating back a half century, which includes a 20-year career leading offshore marine mammal trips in Rhode Island, USA and Puerto Rico. My first eBird entry dates back to May 1980 and I currently have seen around 775 species of birds in Brazil. I offer these details from thousands upon thousands of days in the field to illustrate that my experience led me to have high expectations for this tour. Israel, the tour's operator, delivered. Naturally, things don't always work perfectly in such remote and wild conditions as in the Pantanal. However, as each curve ball revealed itself, Israel was always able to successfully navigate the situation at hand. As a result, with his guidance during my visit, I was able to tally 135 species of birds, nine herps species including anaconda, and 13 mammal species including South America's most sought-after wildlife prize- a jaguar. While I most certainly recommend Israel in all respects, I would be remiss not to mention that while the Pantanal's wildlife is present in abundance, the animals are naturally wild and jaguar sightings are not always guaranteed. The key to seeing one is lots of persistence combined with a dose of luck.
